This is not just another Paris travel guide. The originality of this book lies in the fact that it describes all the main cultural sights of Paris with a focus on Le Marais, the most historical and best-preserved neighbourhood in the French capital, that escaped the city’s transformation in the 19th century. This is done in the belief that this approach helps the visitor understand better this multi-layered and therefore complex -and, for this reason, fascinating- city.
This book, based mainly on a large number of black and white photos, accompanied by concise historical and architectural explanations, endeavours to reveal the treasures of Paris, including the less-known ones, to the visitor who desires to discover them.
Along with all the well-known sights of Paris, from Notre Dame to the Eiffel tower, it presents interesting but not always sufficiently known museums, luxurious mansions, with sumptuous courtyard façades and lovely gardens hidden behind high walls, medieval houses with a wooden framework and Gothic basements and even the castle of ‘the Primate of France’.
The author of this book holds a Ph.D. in Architectural History from the National Technical University of Athens and a master’s in heritage preservation from the Ecole de Chaillot of Paris. He is a professor at the University of the Peloponnese, where he teaches these subjects. He is also a fervent cultural hiker.
His travel books (mostly about Greece) are addressed to you, the reader with a special interest in cultural sites. Title: Very carefully researched.
Review: I Found this book to be a source of information about the oldest part of Paris that I had not been able to find elsewhere. Very carefully researched and written. I saw the quality of the photographs criticized, but this is not intended to be a picturebook but an important source of information, which it is. Well done.

Title: Guide to Old Paris off the tourist track
Review: Paris Disclosed is a guide to the architectural gems of the oldest parts of Paris, the environs of Notre Dame. Roubien has lived in the area and appears to know it intimately. Many of the buildings he recommends are off the beaten tourist track. He lays out the guide geographically, moving from neighborhood to neighborhood as a someone walking through the city might travel. He describes the architectural significance of each building and its historical significance.The writing is clear, to the point, and well edited. There are also numerous color photographs and maps. The photographs not only capture the buildings under discussion but also some of the street and neighboring buildings to give the reader a sense of the overall context.If you are planning a trip to Paris, Paris Disclosed should inform your planning. Even if you aren’t planning a trip, this guide will give you a sense of the oldest quarters of the city from the street level. My only quibble is that Roubien did not provide more historical detail.

Review: My rating 4.8If you want to get to know Paris, this little booklet “Paris disclosed” by Denis Roubien could reveal real gems in the crown of the old part of the city. The book describes the most important buildings, hotels, castles, and other important parts of Paris, and the entire history of each individual building. This booklet is ideal for every tourist visiting Paris for the first time because through it you will be introduced to the details of each of the most famous buildings. I would recommend the book to tourists and anyone who loves traveling through the history of the French capital. If I ever travel to Paris I will gladly take this booklet with me.

Title: may be useful for someone who knows nothing about paris
Review: I spend a lot of time in Paris, and the Marais is one of my favourite districts. I am always looking for new bits of history or other deeper investigations than the average “tourist’s guide.” If that’s what you’re looking for too, this book is not it. The photos are all b&w many from wikipedia. I get it, if you’re self publishing licensing photos and printing in colour is more expensive. But the most significant flaw, IMO, is that while this book is promoted as a book about the Marais, only half of the book is about that district. The other half of the book deals with the Latin Quarter and other areas of the city. There are much better books out there than this one.

Title: The Hidden Architecture of Paris
Review: I love international travel and I love history. While I’ve been to Paris twice, they were very short visits and my exploration was limited to well-known tourist sites like Notre Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, Sacre Coeur, Montmarte, the Eiffel Tower and such. So, “Paris: Disclosed” which unveils historical gems hidden in the ancient core of Paris instantly grabbed my attention.The author, Denis Roubien, is an architect who teaches History of Art and Arhitecture in a Greek university. His book crams roughly 50 historical buildings and places into 108 pages with numerous photographs and maps to bring the Les Marais neighborhood to life. Many of the buildings described I had never even heard of before. I particularly enjoyed the description of the Hotel de Beauvais which was squeezed into a very odd-shaped piece of land and over the years has welcomed an eclectic clientele including King Louis XIV, his childhood mistress, and Wolfgang Mozart.”Paris Disclosed” is a good resource for travelers looking to get off the beaten path on their next visit to Paris. I only wish the book had included visiting hours and prices alongside each description.

Title: Enlightening Book about the older parts of Paris
Review: This is a delightful book about some of the old parts of Paris, their buildings and history. The explanations were accompanied by beautiful photographs and maps which added considerably to the descriptions. I found myself becoming a little sad at the pictures of The Cathedral of Notre Dame which must have been taken before the fire a couple of years ago. Reading the text, there were places where the sentence structure was awkward and I had to reread some sentences to figure out what the author was saying. That aside, the author has clearly done extensive research into these old buildings and areas, and a reader of the book will benefit from the author’s efforts. A tourist going to visit the city, or anyone simply interested in the history of the older parts of Paris would find this book very valuable. I found it enlightening, educational, and enjoyable though I have never been to Paris.

Title: guide to historical sites
Review: If I was going to Paris, I would very much like to have this little book in my pocket. It is not a definitive guide to the city, but it is not meant to be. Unlike, âdefinitiveâ guides, this book does not overwhelm the reader with choices and information. The focus is narrow: the history and architecture of the oldest part of Paris, the neighborhoods in the vicinity of Notre Dame. The book provides a brief summary of the architectural and historical significance of ancient buildings or the ancient parts of buildings which have survived the centuries and give Paris its distinctive âfeelâ. Itâs a book for walkers who want to have some idea what they are looking at when they stop to take pictures. The prose is clear, smooth and well edited. The author is an expert in the subject and an activist for the preservation of historical sites in Paris. The book is loaded with photographs. It did not bother me that the photos are in black and white. As I said If I was planning a trip to Paris, this is the book I would use as a guide. I donât care about the shopping opportunities have no interest in nightlife and Iâm pretty sure I could find good places to eat without help. But without this book, the beautiful old buildings of Paris would be less meaningful to me.
