Title: An lifting novel set in post World War I Paris.
Review: Great novel with the background of the famed city of lights and romance. The journal format of the novel gives insight into the feelings and thoughts of the two principal characters and ends up being the catalyst that solidifies the love between the two men, the one handicapped and the other with a secret in his past. Beautifully written.

Title: “So Fabrice has found a real Englishman in Paris.”
Review: Author Anthony McDonald has a way like no other author of making the geographical locations that a story takes place in almost as much of the novel as the central characters themselves. THE PARIS NOVEL takes places in the center of Paris called “Le Marais.” This are is full of pre-revolutionary buildings and streets and Mr. McDonald paints vivid picture of the books main protagonist Englishman Peter Ferguson, 28 who moves there in the late 1980’s to hopefully become the writer he longs to be becoming a vital part of the neighborhood known as “Marais.” The books many minor characters and their lives quickly become a part of Peter’s daily life, especially Joe and Dominique. But it is thirty year old Fabrice, an investment banker and Peter’s journey of self discovery of who they truly are and in time what they mean to each other that make THE PARIS NOVEL such a joy to read.

Title: Sweet Discovery
Review: A young man from England breaks up with his girlfriend and comes to Paris to write. Accidentally discovering a true Bohemian part of the city, he meets friends. Then, over time he discovers his love (and this is unexpected and ultimately delightful)

Title: My disappointment emerged quickly when I read clichés after clichés and …
Review: Reading the synopsis, I thought I would relive part of the Paris I discovered as well in 1987 when I arrived to study there. My disappointment emerged quickly when I read clichés after clichés and didn’t find anything about the gay Paris that was appearing at that time. People wanted to experiment (homosexuality had been completely depenalized in 1982 by President Mitterrand). The story is ok and believable, but the context is not. Maybe it’s meant for someone who is not French (as I am), but if a Frenchman can’t really connect to it, then is it worth reading!

Review: Once I really got into this book and sorted out the various characters and their various love lives, it became a most sensitive and moving story which as usual, I didn’t want to end. His descriptive writing brings to life the sights, sounds and real atmosphere of Paris.I loved the juxtaposition of extracts from the book [in italics] which Peter was writing once he had arrived in Paris against the real events being described as he forged new friendships in the Marais and sought to discover who he really was. Another winner from Anthony.

Review: Definitely another 4.5 Once again, Anthony McDonald paints a picture of his locale with the bravura brush of a French Impressionist–an ever-shifting palette of colors and emotions. Elegant descriptions place the reader hard on the cobbled, rain-slicked streets of the Marais, and then he dissolves the image at the flick of a word into a haze of yearning, which veils the background through which emerges the confusion of 27-year-old Peter. He’s an Englishman who should know better the set of his life, but a recent break-up with his latest girlfriend has thrown his certainty and driven him to Paris to recover stability through writing a novel.Unfortunately for Peter, the man who enters his life is not confused, but Fabrice is definitely uncertain, torn between the standard life of normalcy his wealthy, land-owning family and his fiancé expect, and the gay life he’d prefer to live. Fabrice is not alone is disturbing Peter’s comfort zone, and all the characters who appear in the drama are well crafted, brimming with an intensity of life all their own. As the last line of the blurb says: “The city of Paris, its vibrant lifestyle and its inhabitants are all integral characters in this book.” And they most certainly are, all the way to the satisfying conclusion.

Title:
Review: This is another great read from Anthony McDonald. It perfectly evokes the atmosphere of Paris and of French life as seen and experienced by an expatriate; it explores hitherto undiscovered sexuality with realism and subtlety and it maintains the tension of an intriguing ‘will they won’t they’ love story until almost the end. It has a rich and credible cast of characters and is both a brilliant portrayal of French social life and a captivating gay love story.
