Intrepid reporter Charlotte “Charlie” James arrives in Paris in 1938 eager to make a fresh start, but little does she know the trouble that awaits her…
Charlie James is chasing her first big scoop as correspondent for British-based newspaper The Times, and she needs to prove to her boss that she can do this job as well, if not better, than her male counterparts. The best way to forge the necessary contacts quickly is to make well-connected British expats, Lord and Lady Ashworth, her business. Lady Eleanor knows everyone in Parisian high society, and at her sumptuously extravagant annual party, a Circus Ball, Charlie will meet them all.
On the summer solstice eve, the Circus Ball is in full swing, with the Parisian elites entranced by burlesque dancers, tightrope walkers, a jazz band . . . and a horrific murder. A wealthy but unscrupulous investor is dead, and the list of suspects is a veritable who’s who of le haut monde. As Charlie tries to determine who the murderer is, she finds herself drawn into the magical parties, couture houses, and bohemian wine bars of the City of Lights. Soon secrets start to unravel, including some Charlie has a personal stake in keeping hidden.

Title: Good but could have been smoother
Review: In her series debut, Charlie James has just relocated from Australia to Paris to report for The Times. Although not the man he expected, her boss is willing to let her prove herself. She must interview Lord and Lady Eleanor Ashworth, the unofficial social ambassadors in Paris.Charlie makes a good impression and is invited to the Ashworth’s ball of the summer, which makes front-page news – although not for the reason they hoped… A prominent businessman is found with a knife in his chest. With her front-row seat to the story, Charlie works with whomever she can to find the truth and secure her Paris career.I gave this novel 3 stars; I liked the premise and was impressed with a female character who had a realistic occupation. However, the writing could have been smoother and I didn’t feel like I was in Charlie’s head enough to connect with her. She seemed sort of flat as a character, but she may develop throughout the series. The secondary characters in this novel were really good and rounded out the story.I did guess the murderer, but what didn’t jive with me was the ending. I felt I knew Charlie at least a little bit by the end of The Paris Mystery, and her decisions at the end didn’t seem very consistent with her character.Nonetheless, I am interested enough in Charlie James and her trajectory to read the next book. This one has set readers up well for a good bit of intrigue, which I am here for!

Title: Mystery Set in Decadent 1930s Paris
Review: Charlotte “Charlie” James is excited for her first big job for the London-based, The Times. She knows she needs to do her best and even better than anyone else can do it. She is in Paris and understands that she needs connections to get her story. She utilizes the assistance of Lord and Lady Ashworth to make some contacts and is invited to Lady Ashworth’s annual party, A Circus Ball. Charlie is excited to see how many people she can connect with. The night of the Ball, there are burlesque dancers, a jazz band and tightrope walkers adding to the merriment. The murder of an investor ruins the ball and leaves behind a list of suspects. Charlie wants to solve the murder, but is also drawn into the social cycle of Paris and some hidden secrets. The Paris Mystery is set in a magical setting of Paris with the story having twists and turns and more dead bodies showing up. Even with all these factors, The Paris Mystery is a charming, mystery story.Thank you to NetGalley and Vintage for the opportunity to read the ARC of The Paris Mystery.

Title: Just ok
Review: 1938. Journalist Charlie James arrives in Paris to begin her new job as a foreign correspondent for The Times. Sheâs after a big story and needs to get in with the very highly placed Lord and Lady Ashworth. When Charlie is invited to Lady Ashworthâs Circus Ball she is sure it will lead to that big breaking story. Unfortunately what she finds is the body of a man whose death means a lot to many people. And so, Charlie will stop at nothing to solve the crime, and get the story.I have to say, this one just didnât enthrall me. While it was a bit of light reading, I also found it a bit slow. Too many times the story is interrupted by Charlieâs continued reflections on her failed marriage and philandering husband back in Sydney. And much as I love Paris, itâs food, drink, art, fashion, etc., that all became too much a part of the story. Instead, I would have liked more of the prelude to war that was offered at the beginning of the book. It could have offered much more for future books (just an opinion).ââThereâs a lot happening in Paris.â George pointed at Charlie. âYou need to make Lord Ashworth your business. The Prime Minister made sure Lord Ashworth was posted to Paris as a diplomat when King Edward abdicated. Heâs lost face in London with the top brass, but he still has friends in high places right across the Continentâpeople in governments and industryâ¦Chamberlain might not listen, but the people will. Weâll give them the truth.ââI must say there was a real twist at the end which was quite a surprise, and which I really did take issue with. But enough said about that (no spoilers here). On the plus side, I did enjoy Charlie, who comes across as strong, confident, intelligent and interesting. So, not really a bad book, just not what I was expecting (or maybe hoping for).

Title: Disappointed
Review: Well, I did want to like this book. The setting is perfect, the period is right, and the main protagonist sounded interesting.I am on page 72, and am putting this book down now. Frankly, it’s boring, flat — and there is a typo or grammatical error every second page. I don’t think this manuscript ever saw an editor. Maybe you’ll enjoy it more than I did.

Title: journalist in Paris, 1938
Review: I love books set in Paris and a good mystery, so this ticked those boxes for me! I loved that the main character was a journalist and following her journey to both solve a murder and prove herself as a female journalist in a male-dominated field (at that time, 1938). Would recommend!
