Title: Charming Book, Magnificently Delicious Recipes
Review: I ordered this book because it was the only cookbook I could find that included a recipe for Opera Cake. Opera Cake is my husband’s favorite dessert, and so I thought I would make it for his birthday. Well, unfortunately, I learned that the recipe for Opera Cake actually has six (yes, SIX) subrecipes, and would probably take me about 3 days to make … and with a new baby, I wouldn’t have three days to spend on a dessert. So the Opera Cake, the original rationale for getting the book, never got made. But still, I found it somehow heartening that such a complicated recipe could be broken down into readable and comprehensible component parts … something that a mere mortal could actually reproduce in her own American home kitchen – if she had three days and didn’t happen to have a newborn to cater to, that is.One small disappointment was that Greenspan doesn’t give a recipe for almond macaroons (macarons), which were my favorite treat when I spent a little time in France. She just gives a lengthy description of how wonderful they are and says they are hard for the home cook to reproduce. I know she is right in saying so, as I did try to make them once at home using the recipe in Martha Stewart’s Baking Handbook, and they turned nothing like the ones I’d had in France and I considered that recipe a failure. Still, on Amazon.fr there are about 20 different single-subject cookbooks in French on making macarons at home, so I still hold out hope that it’s actually possible and I’ll find a good recipe someday (or get around to ordering one of the French-language macaron treatises). That said, this cookbook is a delight in every other way. The book is partly a travelogue describing the atmosphere and offerings at Paris’s most famous patisseries, and her writing is so evocative, and so charmingly illustrated with line drawings, that you while reading you tend to feel as if you were standing in front of a gleaming case of sweetly scented pastries with a rotund pastry chef behind the counter sending up clouds of artisanal flour as you contemplate your order in line behind an elegant femme in couture high-heels leading a poodle on a leash.Along with the travelogue descriptions you get the occasional informative discourse on ingredients such as chocolate and flour and eggs and how the ones the French pastry chefs use are different from ours. And, of course, there are recipes, wonderful recipes. I made the choclate sables, and they were easy, and totally addictive as Greenspan warns. And I made the hot chocolate and it was so rich I had palpitations afterwards, but the taste was worth the risk of a heart attack. (And it was also easy peasy to make. I called my mom and gave her the recipe over the phone.)Ten stars for this wonderful book.

Title: Wish there had been photos
Review: I like this recipe book especially that the recipes are adapted from the popular patisseries in Paris. The recipes are very well written and I love how the author gives a background to each Patisserie and even about a few ingredients. My only disappointment is the lack of pictures. Not a single photo of the desserts were shown except for a few caricatures that don’t help at all. Some of these desserts are new to me so it would’ve been helpful to have a few illustrations.

Title: Wonderful, but not for the casual baker…
Review: This books is as much memoir and love letter to the bakeries in Paris as it is baking book. That’s actually what I love about it – recipes, but with lots of back story, and information and writing on the amazing bakers that make Paris the mecca for bakers everywhere. The love that Dorie put into this book just seems out of the pages at me – I feel like I’m meeting these bakers myself, that I can smell the ovens and touch the brick walls of the buildings. The recipes are also wonderful (I would expect no less from Chef Greenspan), and she keeps it to the simple yet perfect items we would find in those bakeries on a daily basis, the recipes that make good memories.I love this book, am so happy I got it. But it may not be for the home cook looking for new muffins to try or for someone to walk you through creating a paris-brest. It does, however, have the perfect madeleines!! 🙂 It would be perfect for any foodie who loves visiting Paris, as well as an experienced baker who dreams of french bakeries.

Title: Heaven…I”m in Heaven
Review: This is the most wonderful little book, about the history of Pasteries, the people involved, the places, the names of famous shops and much more! There are recipes interspersed, and since it didn’t have an index, and the Table of Contents was divided only into 4 links, I highlighted each recipe in blue, to make it easy to follow. As I was doing this I wanted to find Cassy’s Almond Cookie Recipe (yes from the Good Witch), and while I was searching for it found the Blog of the Authors’. A little magic added to my memorial day. Look under Dorie! Best to all, and may you enjoy the heavenly delights within.

Title: Oh YES!!!
Review: What was I hoping for? Some great recipes for french pastries and sweets. What did I get? Dorie’s fabulous writing and descriptions and stories that made me literally start baking the moment I opened the book.I had some guests the other evening and was sharing the book with them, reading her description of the Pierre Herme Coffee Tart and we all needed to wipe the drool from our chin.I am looking forward to working my way through each and every recipe. If you have ever needed to visit every patisserie in Paris like me, you will enjoy not only using the book, but reading it as well. But beware, you just may be motivated to purchase a ticket on the next flight to France!

Title: Like being back in Paris
Review: Itâs a lovely homage to Parisian bakers and the superlative work that they do. Itâs a Dorie Greenspan cookbook, so how could it not be divine? Would have given it 5 stars, but the pale color of the type is hard to read. A reflection on design choice, not content.

Review: This has been my first encounter with Dorie Greenspan as a food writer – and I hope it won’t be the last. She captures the joy and skill involved with traditional (and modern) Parisian patisserie with enormous flair and passion.Surprisingly there are no photos – just some exquisite line drawings and elegant typography. You just have to imagine what the creations might look like from her descriptions. But the quality of writing is enough to allow you to do this! Not a cheap book but some lovely recipes that are appropriate for the home-baker. A treat for yourself – even better if someone else will buy it for you as a gift!
