Title: Fantastic beautiful Paris at Night
Review: “The Glow of Paris” is a wonderfully gorgeous black and white study of all the bridges of Paris, taken at night. The photographer took amazing pains, experimenting with different exposures and developing methods to obtain what he presents in this book: bright areas are not overexposed and yet details normally lost in shadows are visible. The final photograph versions were taken with a medium format camera on Iford black and white film. If you love black and white photography, “The Glow of Paris” is well worth its modest cost.

Review: Outstanding document! I believe I am qualified as I lived in Paris many years, rue du Bac, very near the Seine river. Not only the photos are marvelous and inspiring, the history attached to these bridges is just as fascinating. Thank, many thanks, Gary Zuercher, from Wooster, Ohio, that I am sure will also mean something to you.

Title: A Treasure For Every Art Historian, Engineer and Lover of Paris!
Review: Very few cities in the world have more varied, beautiful and historical bridges than does Paris. Unless you happen to be a student of history, however, you might not realize that we quite nearly lost most of them. As World War II was coming to a close Adolph Hitler ordered the German military to visit the same kind of destruction on Paris as they retreated as had been visited upon Warsaw, leveling it to the ground. While some historians disagree with his statement, the then-military governor of Paris, General Dietrich von Cholitz has always claimed that he refused to carry out Hitler’s order because he didn’t want to be known to history as the man who destroyed Paris, a story that Gary Zuercher, author of The Glow of Paris: The Bridges of Paris at Night repeats in his prologue.Several months ago I received a very early Advanced Reader’s Copy of The Glow of Paris: The Bridges of Paris at Night. I could say very little about the book itself from the ARC. Quickly run off on a laser-jet printer, the photos were blurry, the captions and other extra materials totally absent, the text still in double-spaced manuscript format – and printed on 8.5 x 11 printer paper, it wasn’t even the correct size. I wrote to the publisher to say “OK – but all I can legitimately say in a review is that is has potential.” A real copy of the book, exactly the same as this one, arrived on my doorstep yesterday.Done in a square format just slightly larger than 12 x 12, the book contains 191 pages which illustrate and discuss thirty five of the bridges (some say there are 37 total) that cross the Seine inside the city of Paris. From the ornate yet utilitarian Viaduc D’Austerlitz hanging in midair to the ultra-modern Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir, built in 2006 and open only to foot traffic, each bridge is illustrated from a variety of angles. Accompanying text discusses the unique history of each bridge. Most of the photographs, all in black and white to reveal details that might otherwise be obscured, are spread over one and a half adjacent pages. The photos are organized by bridge, divided into sections that reflect their placement along the Seine. Endpapers consist of a large map showing the location of each bridge, while each section is accompanied by a more detailed map of the location of each of the included bridges. The book is beautifully printed on a medium-heavyweight semi-gloss paper to show off the photos and nicely bound.Grandma’s $0.02 – Whether you are an art historian, an engineer with a love of bridges or simply someone who loves Paris and would like to explore in more depth, The Glow of Paris: The Bridges of Paris at Night will be a delightful & treasured addition to your library.Recommended

Title: A Resplendent And Gorgeous Coffee Table-Sized Book About “The Bridges Of Paris,” That Glows!!!
Review: Accomplished photographer and writer Gary Zuercher was living with his French wife in Paris when he experienced an amazing epiphany. In what can best be described as a happy mistake, he overexposed a black and white photograph of one of the many bridges that cross the Seine in Paris, the Pont Alexandre III. The result was what Zuercher calls a “breathtaking” image of this most beautiful bridge – a photograph that captured the “majestic” light glowing in a way that even the naked eye couldn’t see.: It was a transcendent moment for Zuercher that inspired him to begin a five-year project to capture the “majestic luminescence” of the Paris bridges at night. The result is a resplendent coffee table-sized volume entitled, “The Glow of Paris: The Bridges of Paris at Night.” It is a brilliantly conceived collection of stunning black and white photographs of the 35 vastly different and historically fascinating bridges that span the Seine. Equally compelling are the author’s meticulously researched descriptions, including a multitude of historical, architectural and cultural background that transports the reader to Paris, since the days of Julius Caesar, Napoleon, numerous Kings and Princess Diana.Author Gary Zuercher both shows us various views of the dazzling, expansive bridge, Pont Notre Dame, but also informs us of how the span was originally erected before the birth of Christ, and later swept away by the flood of 1406, before it was rebuilt again and again. Like some of the bridges along the Seine, Pont Notre Dame was large enough to actually have houses built on it. Despite warnings, these particular houses collapsed along with the bridge in 1499, killing countless Parisians. This book also contains photos and the story of the majestic, ancient Pont Royal Bridge, built in 1689. This bridge featured a guardhouse for the collection of tolls. But the tolls, however, proved overwhelmingly unpopular. One pedestrian crosser was so aggravated and incensed by the toll that he “drew his sword and killed the toll collector.”There are also stories of romance and play that accompany the gorgeous photos. For instance, the Pont de l’Archeveche, which was built during the reign of King Charles X in 1828, consists of three arches. Unfortunately, it is also overloaded with more than ten thousand “cadenas de l’amour” (padlocks signifying love). Zuercher informs us that sometime around 2008, couples began writing their names on the locks, attaching the locks to the guardrails of this bridge and “flinging the key(s) into the river as a symbol of their undying love.” Sadly, the guardrails sometime give out and have to be replaced. The locks are simply thrown away. Perhap. a sadly ironic and symbolic gesture that mimics love itself. For anyone who’s ever fallen in love with or while in Paris, or anyone who dreams of visiting the “City of Lights,” this book is the next best thing. Readers will find themselves aglow as this book transports them to the magical city or Paris.
