Title: Beautiful. Creepy. Enthralling.
Review: I loved this book. My favorite city and era, beautifully written with fascinating characters. This was going to be a 5 star review for me, but the ending, although it worked well as story, had too much telling, like a Christie revelation, after I’d been living closely with the characters. I thought the author had a couple of narrative choices that would have worked better. Nonetheless, it was a good twisty finish to a superb story of feminist defiance in a time and situation where men held terrifying and oppressive power.

Title: Mesmerizing
Review: “Hysteria” was, for centuries, diagnosed when women reacted to sexual abuse or even expressed desire. Notorious in the budding field of neurology and mental health treatment was Paris’s Salpetriere Asylum, whose “Hysteria” unit during the late nineteenth century was home to thousands of women, many of whom were exploited through hypnosis by the infamous physician Jean-Martin Charcot and put on display in public lectures. With spellbinding detail, Jennifer Cody Epstein revisits these terrifying chambers and tells the gripping stories of Laure and Josephine, young women caught in the throes of this madness. Built on meticulous research and true historical details—Sigmund Freud, for example, studied with the acclaimed Charcot—this novel is thought-provoking, elegantly written and like one of Charcot’s sessions, mesmerizing.

Title: An interesting but slow story
Review: 3.5 starsI picked this one up because I’ve always been interested in stories set in mental asylums, especially during the 19th century. At the time, hysteria was considered a diagnosable physical illness yet it’s clear how little the medical community understood of women. It was not surprising to read how terribly women were treated by men and institutions. The doctor in this book is more concerned with fame and notoriety than the well-being of his female patients. We get many scenes of him hypnotizing these women in front of a theater of peers. It’s all a spectacle and at the expense of the patients. You can’t help but feel sympathetic for the women in this novel and I particularly liked the relationship between Laure and Josephine. I was definitely rooting for a happy ending for those two even with everything stacked against them. I did lose a little bit of interest in the second half once it became clear where the story was going but overall this was an interesting albeit slow read. It makes me really want to rewatch the fantastic tv show The Knick now!

Title: I can’t wait to read it again!
Review: Closing the cover on an excellent novel is both one of the happiest and saddest experiences I get to have.I am happy that I got to live in that world for the hours it took me to read the book, and sad that those characters are no longer sharing their story.I am happy that I have the memory of meeting them for the first time, and sad knowing that even when I return to them – and I will – it will not be quite the same.I am happy that when I re-enter this story, I will be able to savor it in a way I never can on a first reading, but I am sad that that rushing excitement to know what happens next is no more.

Title: Well-researched story
Review: Ms. Epstein has masterfully woven historical detail into this story that definitely paints a stark and disturbing picture of a women’s asylum in Paris in the late 1800’s. It realistically tells the story of the treatment of the mental patients during this era. This is a difficult read, but expertly plotted. The main character is well-developed and has a heart for the women who suffered from abuse and trauma, and then subjected to humiliating forms of treatment that only exacerbated their condition.****I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Title: Compelling page turner!
Review: Another compelling story from Jennifer Cody Epstein! As always, painstakingly researched, with thoughtful details that thrust the reader right into the heart of late 19th century Paris. Human, three-dimensional characters, with the sympathetic, flawed, conflicted Laure at the center. And a relentlessly captivating story — get ready for some late nights with this page-turner!

Title: Hard to read
Review: This book was fascinating in its description of “hysterics” in 19th century Paris. Based upon real medical practices of the time, I found it both incredibly tragic and horrendous. At times almost too depressing to read, I am glad that I got to see how Josephine was able to take back her power in the end.
